Climbing the hillside above the farm

A scene from
'The Watercress Girl'

With her father's indulgence, Frank asks Mary to accompany him on a walk around the area — the first act of 'courtship' on his part. The couple climb the steep hillside behind Mary's farm to admire the views of the valley below.

Comparing the use of the location: The viaduct is the central location for many of Mad Dog's early scenes — including Charles meeting with Fenton — and always shot from close-at-hand. In the The Watercress Girl, the viaduct appears in a single brief sequence, and in the middle-distance. From a camera position high up on the hillside at Monsal Head, the viaduct and the valley are framed in the background of this shot, with the roadway in the valley-floor hidden behind the tree-line.
