The Derbyshire village of Ilam is located south of Bakewell, north of Ashbourne and west of Matlock, between the A52 and the A515.

BY CAR:

To appoach Ilam from the south, join the A52 and head towards Ashbourne. On the far side of Ashbourne, take a right hand turn, heading towards Blore and Ilam. Alternatively, join the A515 by leaving the A50 east of Uttoxeter, and head in the direction of Ashbourne. Approaching Ashbourne join the northbound A52, headed for Leek. Arriving in the centre of the village of Ilam, take a right uphill turn at the Memorial Stone towards Alstonfield. The rough track access to both Ilam Tops Farm and Air Cottage (complete with cattle grid) is located on the right hand side near the brow of the hill.

Note: there is no public parking along this track, and visitors wishing to leave their cars at the only (private) parking area at Air Cottage, should contact the bed and breakfast farm in advance to seek permission to park. Alternatively, park in the village of Ilam and reach the area on foot.

To reach Monsal Head by car from Ilam

To reach Monsal Head from Ilam: take a left turn at the end of the Air Cottage/Ilam Tops Farm track, and descend the hill into Ilam village. Take a left turn and travel in the direction of Dovedale, Thorpe and Tissington, continuing ahead to the junction with the A515. At the A515, turn left and travel north. Take a right turn at the junction with the B5055, singposted for Monyash. Follow the road to its end, at a junction in Bakewell, next to the Rutland Arms Hotel. Take a left turn, follow the road around to the right, and at the War Memorial roundabout take the first turn to join the A6 northbound. Turn off the A6 at the sign for Ashford in the Water and Monsal Head, to join the A6020. Take an almost immediate left to enter the village of Ashford, (signposted for Monsal Head and Wardlow) and then turn right at the Ashford Arms public house to join the narrow B6465. Follow the road uphill, slowing as parking signs become visible on the left, before making a sharp left hand turn (just before the Monsal Head hotel) into the entrance turning for the Monsal pay-and-display car park).

BY TRAIN:

Most useful destinations are Chesterfield and Derby, completing the journey by bus. For travel information, use the www.qjump.co.uk website, here.

BY BUS:

It is possible to travel to Ilam by bus from nearby towns, but the frequency of services (several of which are morning and evening 'school services only), the length of journey times, and the number of changes en route, makes a day trip all but impossible. For details of those services which do exist, see the www.traveline.org.uk site, here.
